“A criminal who meets his equal for the first time” 11-11-2020
A friend gave me this prompt, so I decided to indulge her and this is what came of it:
Kassius ducked to the side, narrowly avoiding the energy bolt that sizzled past him at a blinding speed. ‘Close’ he thought to himself as he aimed his blaster. Curiously he looked around for the source. He had only heard the charging noise of his new found opponents weapon and now had to defend himself from who knows who – or what. Martians had taken over earth long ago, humans having faced near extinction many times. His opponent though, he soon found from the glint of his foe’s gun, was human after all.
‘Curious’, he thought to himself as he let loose a deadly charge. His aim lacking though as his opponent dodged much like he had. This was going to be a fun skirmish, he could tell. What he couldn’t tell, however, was whether or not she was security for the bank he had snuck his way into, or someone who had followed him for some odd reason. He shrugged as he aimed his gun at her cover and thought to himself ‘Oh well, an enemy is an enemy.’
She jumped over the crates she had used for cover and let loose a volley that cut into his jacket, leaving burning trails across his chest. A close one, but he figured eventually he may have some nice scars to show the ladies from it. She charged and aimed straight at him, her aim just as off as his as they exchanged fire. Near misses here and there, but never a final kill shot.
For hours it seemed they fought, each at some point getting the upper hand, but then the other taking it just as fast, but neither able to deliver the final blow. It was as if, perhaps, Kassius had met his match, which was almost an impossible feat within itself. He had to know her name. He called for a cease fire, both for his question, and also to hear for potentially approaching authorities.
“You put on quite a good fight,” Kassius exclaimed, “What is your name? I am Kassius.”
The lady, with elegance that matched a panther, and the speed of a cheetah, bounded forward and exclaimed, “I’m Angel.” And she pulled the trigger, while saying as he fell, “It’s nice to meet you.”
Kassius fell to the ground in shock, surprised that Angel would have pulled the trigger after a parlay was called, and then he heard a voice that called him out of his stupor.
“Casey,” a woman called out from the distance, and slowly he pulled himself to his feet. Kassius would have to continue his fight with Angel at some point, in the meantime it seemed Angelica would have to help him pick up the Nerf darts so he could get home before his mother got mad at him.
