r/WritingPrompts “A story where the princess slays the knight and saves the dragon”

I found that prompt here earlier today, and in an effort to get more stuff I feel comfortable recording I decided to write a story based of this prompt. This way I won’t have to worry about asking the author of the story to let me have permission to record it! Anyway, here ya go:

With a saddened gaze Princess Azoki looked at the terrible scene before her. This mother dragon, quite possibly the last mother dragon, had met a terrible fate. Word had spread that knights tasked with hunting the rumors of the last dragon were around, though word was that they were leagues and leagues away. But here she lies, the last of the dragon mothers- lifeless, and cold.

“At least she took a great deal of them out before she was felled herself,” the princess thought to herself as she gazed upon the dozens of knights that lay dead or dying around this site of carnage. Whoever was still alive the princess quickly took care of, with her sharp knives she always carried. As she stopped to think of the best way to make a burial for the dragon, a stark cry rang through the air. The unmistakable sound of dragon younglings. In pain.

The princess sprung to action, grabbing a spear and racing towards the sound. No one had known the dragon mother had laid eggs, let alone that they hatched. It was up to the princess to at least die trying to protect the lives of the dragons that remain, after all they had done in return for their kingdom. Rounding a corner of stone leading into the mouth of a large cave the princess came to a quiet stop.

No one had ever seen a dragon nest in the wild before, at least that she had known. For the last seven generations of humans the dragons all had lived, bred, and died within her city walls, in human abodes. As far as anyone had known, outside those walls in the wild dragons were hunted to extinction. The princess watched carefully as a lone knight circled the nest, his own spear raised as he chanted the prayers and war cries of his people. She couldn’t see or hear any evidence of anyone else in the canyon, so she slowly moved closer and raised her own spear.

She threw her spear just as the knight caught sight of her, and by then it was too late for him to have done anything. Her aim was true, and the spear caught him right in his chest, embedding itself deeply. He let out a surprised noise of pain and shock, and fell to his knees. Knowing the dragons now were safe, Princess Azoki took her time approaching the knight, and he took his time changing his gaze from one of anger and pain, to fear- and more pain. The princess didn’t make it any less painful for him before she turned her attention to the nest, now sure there were no more threats around. In the nest were five eggs. More than she herself had seen since the dragon mother had stopped laying. It looks like, perhaps, the dragons do stand a chance after all.
